Did Somebody say Bid Whist? By R. Wesley Agee © 2009

Sometime ago back in the mid 1990's, I  got a call from a representative of the company that publish and sells the majority of playing cards  all over the world.  My book titled "How to Play Bid Whist" was listed as an advertised item included  in their playing  card decks for over a decade as one of the products they  sold.  The telephone call pertained to a request made by an elite group of Black franchise owners of  a major hamburger network  to include a bid whist tournament  as one of the entertainment  events at their annual meeting.  One of the co-sponsors of the annual meeting was a leading soda beverage manufacturer and distributor  all over the world.  These top companies had made a search throughout the United States to find someone to conduct the bid whist tournament.  I was contacted because of my connection as the author of the only  authentic book  at the time  on bidwhist which was  marketed by the playing card company.  I accepted the challenge.

Going forward with  drawing up a plan  detailing the process and procedure to  orchestrate the bid whist tournament turned out to be one of my most memorable and cherished  experiences.  I enjoyed  the  opportunity to work with some of the great  minds and well cultured  individuals who had come together as Black entrepreneurs  to map out their strategy for their continued success in the market place.  The bid whist tournament was a complete success.  These Black professionals were well versed and  knowledgeable about the rules for playing bid whist.  They spoke about having learned to play the game  while serving in the military service,  while attending various colleges (both Black and White predominately schools), and  from relatives and friends during  family  reunions and various holiday occasions.

Everybody had a grand old time  during the tournament thrash talking, slamming the table, and  giving the  high five when they made their called bid.

After the tournament, many of the participants purchased my book commenting that it makes a terrific African American  gift or a Kwanzaa gift.  Some of the people expressed an interest in downloading bidwhist in the same way  that is available for downloading spades or downloading bridge.  I went on to continue working on other projects concerning bid whist namely, I wrote my next book "How to Conduct a Bid Whist Tournament" and later produced a CD  on bid whist  which is a first of its kind  where a live person competes with computer players.  So the story goes on  and the fun begins  when you get  a room full of Black folks together and  listen to their responses when  they hear "Did Somebody  Say Bid Whist?"

Learning the Game of Bid Whist by R. Wesley Agee © 2009

I joined the United States Air Force right after finishing high school in the mid-west. I mean the recruiter was waiting for me as I marched down the steps directly into his car and then off to the military base.  The great thing about the military service is that you meet people from all over the United States and other countries.  You learn about many different cultures.  The one thing I learned which I will always treasure pertains to my own culture and that was  a card  game called bid whist.  At this time, I had finished my basic training and was stationed in Massachusetts.  Was it ever so cold  during the winter in this state.  After work at the beginning of the weekend  when the weather was to cold to be hanging out  in the social clubs, we all stayed in the barracks.  All the black guys, young and old, did nothing but played  bidwhist.  Back in those days in the mid 1960’s, if you did not play bid whist, you were really left out in the cold.  So I spent time looking over different players shoulders watching how they played  each card to a trick.  Nobody  in this group played spades or bridge and probably did even know how to play these card games.Today, if you wanted to learn these games, you can download spades or download bridge.

As a matter of fact, back in the mid 1960’s, the only way you could learn to play bid whist is to watch  others play or have somebody with enough patience to teach you the rules as far as how they play the game.  There were no books available where you could read and learn the rules on how bid whist is played by black folks.  At least, not until I wrote the first book in the year 1979 titled “How to Play Bid Whist.”  Now you  find people from all over the United States and in other countries who have purchased my book and now can visit my web site to buy my book not only  as an African American gift or a Kwanzaa gift but also as a general purpose gift.  Also, you  can now buy  a CD which I  created on  bid whist  and enjoy competing with computer players.

I am truly thankful that  I learned how to play bid whist and  now spreading the word about  bid whist all over the world.

My Game is Bid Whist! by R. Wesley Agee © 2009

I recall back in the early 1980’s when I had just moved from the East coast to the West coast.  I thought it was going to be easy meeting people in Los Angeles (LA) because of the reputation of there is something in LA for everybody regardless of who you are and what you like to do.  I soon found out that you have to draw a  line making a small circle to meet people who you prefer to hang around.  I am a bidwhist player and I wanted to find the crowd of people who played  bid whist.  So I start asking around and  most of the responses I got was “No,  I don’t play bid whist that well or I never heard of the game, but I do play a good game of spades.”  At that time, I did not play spades.  Then, I would come across the more upscale personalities who played bridge.  At that time, I also did not play bridge.  Today, with all the rules of different games posted on the internet, it is quite convenient for me to download spades and/or download bridge and  become quite  competitive with playing these particular card games.

Since bid whist has long been considered  dating back to early 1930’s as a card game primarily played by African Americans,  I have adopted a tradition of  giving  a bid whist product  as a gift.  A bid whist rule book and/or a bid whist CD make a terrific African American gift or  a Kwanzaa  gift  for birthdays, social reasons, and holiday occasions. Now that there is so much text material out there today on the internet pertaining to the subject of bid whist, that is why  “My game is bid Whist.”
